When It Is Needed

How a Dewatering System Works

A ring of wellpoints is jetted around the excavation perimeter at close spacing, typically every metre or two depending on the ground. Each connects by a swing pipe to a common header main running around the site, and the header connects to a vacuum-assisted dewatering pump.

The pump draws air and water together, lowering the water table across the whole ring rather than at individual points. The overlapping cones of depression create a drawdown across the enclosed area, and the excavation proceeds inside a zone that is now above the lowered table.

  2. Point spacing and depth are designed for the excavation footprint.
  3. Points are jetted and connected to the header main.
  4. The system runs and the table is drawn down before excavation begins.
  5. Pumping continues throughout the works, generally without interruption.

Contamination on brownfield sites adds a further layer.
