Irrigation Suitability Versus Drinking Water
These are different questions with different tests. An irrigation-suitability screen looks at salinity, pH, iron and sediment, and answers whether the water will grow plants and survive contact with your equipment. It says nothing about whether the water is safe to drink.
Potable assessment means a full laboratory analysis against the SANS 241 national drinking water standard, covering microbiological, chemical and physical parameters. It costs considerably more and takes longer.
Untreated wellpoint water should not be assumed safe to drink. Shallow groundwater sits close to surface sources of contamination, and a clear, odourless sample tells you nothing about its microbiological or chemical safety. Only a laboratory analysis against SANS 241 can support a potable conclusion, and treatment is usually required even then.
Under the City of Cape Town's Water By-law, a groundwater system may not be interconnected with the municipal water installation.
When to Test
- After installation. Once the point has been pumped clear of drilling fines, so the sample reflects the formation rather than the installation.
- Before specifying filtration. Treatment should follow a result, not a guess. Iron removal equipment fitted for a problem that turns out to be sediment is expensive and useless.
- When something visibly changes. New staining, a metallic or sulphurous smell, cloudiness or a change in colour.
- When plants start suffering. Leaf tip burn and gradual decline in salt-sensitive plants often trace back to rising conductivity.
- Periodically on coastal properties. Salinity can drift with abstraction and season.
- At the end of a dry summer. A drawn-down water table concentrates dissolved salts, so the worst-case reading comes in late summer, not mid-winter.
How Sampling Works
The pump is run long enough to draw fresh formation water rather than water standing in the pipework. Samples go into clean containers appropriate to the parameters being tested, are kept cool, and reach the laboratory quickly, because some readings shift with time and temperature. Field measurements for pH, conductivity and temperature are often taken on site at the same time.

What Cape Town Groundwater Tends to Show
Two patterns come up repeatedly. Iron is common across the sandy aquifers and is usually cosmetic rather than dangerous, but it stains paving and pool surfaces and clogs drip irrigation. Salinity rises towards the coast, and properties near the shoreline on the West Coast strip and the False Bay side more often return elevated conductivity.
Nitrates turn up in older, denser suburbs and near agricultural ground. None of this is predictable from an address, which is the entire argument for testing rather than assuming.

Can I drink wellpoint water?

What test do I need for garden irrigation?

Why is my wellpoint water staining everything orange?
Dissolved iron oxidising when it meets air. It is very common in Cape Town's sandy aquifers, generally not a health issue at irrigation concentrations, and treatable with iron removal filtration once a test confirms the level.
My water smells of rotten eggs. What is that?
Usually hydrogen sulphide, produced by bacteria in low-oxygen groundwater. It is unpleasant rather than dangerous at typical levels, but it should be tested rather than assumed, and it often accompanies iron problems.
How often should wellpoint water be tested?
Once at installation, then whenever the water visibly or noticeably changes. Coastal properties and anyone relying on the water for sensitive planting benefit from a check every year or two, ideally at the end of summer when readings are at their worst.
Is wellpoint water safe for a swimming pool?
It is commonly used for top-ups, but iron and high salinity cause staining and scale, and elevated iron will discolour the water when chlorine is added. Test before you start filling.
Can water quality change over time?
Yes. Salinity concentrates as the water table drops through summer, iron levels shift with abstraction, and nearby land use can affect nitrates. A result from five years ago is not a current description of your water.
