Persistent sand is a screen problem at the point, not a filtration problem. Filtration protects the equipment while the underlying cause is dealt with; it is not the cure.
Iron Problems
Dissolved iron is invisible in the glass at the outlet and then oxidises on contact with air, which is why the first sign is usually orange staining on paving, walls, pool surfaces and light-coloured plaster rather than discoloured water.

Filtration for Irrigation
Different irrigation needs different protection. Pop-up sprinklers tolerate reasonably dirty water. Drip lines and micro-jets do not: emitter apertures are small enough that fines and iron slime will close them within a season, and a blocked drip zone is far more expensive to sort out than a filter.
Filtration also has to be sized for flow. An undersized filter creates a pressure drop that starves the far end of the irrigation system, and the symptoms look exactly like a failing pump.
