When the pipe enters the saturated layer, the return flow changes character and the driller stops at the point where the formation is producing. An LDPE riser with a filter screen on the end is then fed down inside the steel, and the steel pipe is drawn back out, leaving the screen sitting in the water-bearing sand.
The whole sequence usually runs two to four hours on a straightforward site. That speed is the reason a wellpoint costs a fraction of a borehole.
Ground That Jets, and Ground That Does Not

Typical Depths
Most Cape Town wellpoints finish somewhere between 6 and 12 metres. Suction is the hard limit: a surface-mounted pump can only lift water so far, and once the standing water level sits deeper than roughly 8 metres below the pump, a wellpoint stops being viable regardless of what the sand is doing. That threshold, not the drilling, is what rules out the higher-lying suburbs.
Site Assessment
- Access is checked first. The jetting equipment and hoses need a route to the position, and a water supply to feed the jet pump.
- The position is chosen near the intended pump location, existing power and the irrigation manifold, since every metre of pipe run costs pressure.
- Known conditions in the immediate area are considered, along with anything visible on site such as exposed rock or made ground.
- The no-water fee is agreed before anything starts, because unsuccessful attempts do happen.
Yield and Multiple Wellpoints
Once the point is in, the pump is run and delivery is measured. Domestic wellpoints in good sand commonly fall somewhere between 1,000 and 3,000 litres an hour, but that figure is a measurement, not a specification, and it varies with the season.
Where one point cannot meet demand, a second or third can be jetted and manifolded into the same pump. Two moderate points often outperform one good one, because each is drawing from a smaller cone of depression and the formation recovers between cycles. It is the standard fix on larger gardens and commercial sites.

Cape Town Ground
The sandy belt is the productive ground. The Cape Flats aquifer underlies the low-lying sand through Athlone, Grassy Park, Philippi and Mitchells Plain, and the West Coast strip from Milnerton up through Table View, Parklands, Bloubergstrand and Melkbosstrand is sand for the same geological reason. Parts of the Northern Suburbs jet well; parts do not.
Higher ground is a different proposition. The slopes towards Table Mountain, Constantia, Hout Bay and the Durbanville hills carry shallower soil over rock, and the water table sits too deep for suction even where sand exists. Those properties are usually a borehole conversation instead.
Winter rainfall drives everything. The table recovers between roughly June and September and draws down through summer, so a point jetted in late summer is being set at the season's low water level, which is arguably the safer time to establish real depth.

No. Wellpoint drilling uses water jetting through sand to around 6 to 12 metres with hand-carried equipment. Borehole drilling uses a rig to cut through rock to 30 metres or more. Different machines, different depths, and roughly a tenfold difference in cost.
How long does the drilling take?
Two to four hours on a typical site, assuming the equipment can reach the position and the sand cooperates. Difficult ground, obstructions and a second attempt in a new position all add time.
What happens if no water is found?
A no-water or dry-hole fee applies, usually somewhere between R2,500 and R4,000. Agree that figure in writing before work starts, along with how many attempts it covers and what counts as a successful strike.
Will drilling damage my garden or paving?
The hole itself is small, but the jetting process returns water and sand to the surface, so the immediate area gets wet and muddy. Reinstatement is usually straightforward on lawn. Ask how close to paving, pools and boundary walls they are prepared to work.
Can a wellpoint be drilled through a driveway or under paving?
Sometimes, but it is rarely worth it. The point needs future access for servicing and re-jetting, and paving makes both harder. Most installers will look for a soft-ground position within a sensible pipe run of the pump instead.
Do I need more than one wellpoint?
Only if a single point cannot supply what you need. That decision follows the measured yield, not the size of the property. Larger gardens, commercial landscaping and tank-fed systems are the usual reasons for a second or third point.
Does jetting affect my neighbours' groundwater?
A single domestic wellpoint draws a small cone of depression and normally has no noticeable effect next door. Concentrated abstraction across many properties does lower a local water table, which is part of why the City asks for groundwater use to be registered and metered.
